Our Adoption Process

1

View our adoptable dogs and complete our online adoption application for the dog you’re interested in welcoming into your home.

2

Meet Your Match

Once we’ve reviewed your application, our adoption team will contact you. If it’s a good fit, we’ll arrange an interview and a meet-and-greet with the dog.

2

Complete The Adoption

If the meet-and-greet goes well, our adoption team will review the paperwork with you and assist in finalizing the details for welcoming your new family member!

Our Requirements

At Herding Home Animal Rescue, we aim to ensure the best match between adopters and our dogs. Below, you’ll find the requirements for adopting one of our rescues.

  • Meet and Greets

    • By Appointment Only: Meet and greets are available by appointment. To schedule, your adoption application must first be pre-approved.

  • Pre-approval Process
    • Pre-approval ensures you are eligible to adopt but does not guarantee you will be approved for the specific dog you apply for. Factors such as lifestyle, experience, and compatibility with the dog are considered to ensure the best fit for both you and the dog.
    • Steps to Pre-approval:
      • Home Inspection: We conduct a home visit to ensure a safe and suitable environment.
      • Vet Reference Check: If you currently have pets or have had pets in the past, we require a veterinary reference
      • Interview: A conversation to discuss your application, expectations, and the specific dog you’re interested in.
  • General Requirements
    • Age: You must be at least 21 years old to adopt.
    • ID: Please have a valid, government-issued ID ready and available.
    • Pet Policy for Renters: If you rent your home, be prepared to show proof of your pet policy. This will include breed restrictions, weight limits, and the number of pets allowed.
    • Spay/Neuter: All current dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered unless a medical condition prohibits surgery.
  • Adoption Fees
    • Senior Dogs (8 years and older): $300
    • Adult Dogs (7 months to 8 years): $350
    • Puppies (6 months and under): $400
      • Proof of attendance at one training session or class by the time the puppy is 6 months old (or within one month of adoption) is required.

FAQ

  • What does my adoption fee include? Your $300-$400 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines current to the age of the dog/puppy.

  • Can you hold a dog for me? Unfortunately, we cannot hold dogs. We operate on a first come, first serve basis and plan meet and greets accordingly with approved applicants. If you are interested in a dog, fill out the application right away.

  • Do you offer discounted rates? We do not offer discounted adoption rates. We are a nonprofit organization and our adoption fees go directly towards medical bills, training, and other costs to care for dogs in need. Each rescued dog costs an average of $1,300, with some medical bills exceeding $10,000

  • Do you know the history of my dog? Unfortunately, many dogs that we save entered the shelter as strays or were surrendered by their owners with little or no information. Herding Home Animal Rescue (HHAR) will always report information about their personalities, temperament, health and training based on how they've done in our rescue and/or foster home.
